In One Thousand and One Nights, to call a loved one “soul of my soul” names the emptiness of living without them; Aladdin says it to Badroulboudour. Asked as a child what a soul was, the perfumer’s mother answered that there is no single definition — it is an invisible presence linking us to the divine, a little like the vanilla trail of a perfume. Now as a scented candle.
